Catalin, Head of SW Engineering
Graduate in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at University Politehnica of Bucharest, Catalin has over 14 years of experience in embedded software development. He started his career as a software developer, made the next steps as a Team Lead in the Automotive industry and Scrum Master in the Military industry. With his strong technical background and leadership skills, Catalin coordinates our Engineering Competence Center on the path to performance and innovation.
- What made you take the leap and start this journey 🚀?
I received the opportunity to be a pioneer of the Engineering Competence Center and extend our expertise in the Automotive industry, where the company already successfully delivered digital software solutions. So, my new mission was to make a comprehensive update to the existing services portfolio. It was a chance I simply could not miss.
- What was the moment you knew you’d made the right decision to work here 🏢?
At the beginning of my journey in SII Romania, our colleagues in France needed someone to help them with an ongoing project. After that, I think our client was pretty happy with the work and insights I offered. With the support of our commercial team, we started a new embedded software development project that was managed by SII Romania. Based on the challenges and the fast-paced environment, I knew I made the right decision.
- What was your best day as a FUNgineer?
I don’t have a “best day” as a FUNgineer. That would mean to exclude a lot of great experience. It`s the feeling I have by being part of the team that wins a new project, receiving an e-mail from the customer thanking the team for the hard work or a summer evening spent with my team in front of a cold beer after a high complexity project. All of these moments came in my mind when thinking about the “best day as FUNgineer”.
- What challenges or setbacks did you face along the way ⛰?
I recall the start of my journey in SII Romania. The company already had high standards for the existing Automotive projects, so I knew I had to create a strong basis for the embedded software solutions department to help the company make an important step beyond the great results achieved so far. The biggest challenge was to identify top talents with high ambitions within an emerging market. I am grateful that it was a successful mission, as now we are a great team and continuously investing to take our skills to the next level.
- What are you most proud of? What is your biggest accomplishment 🛴?
I am very proud that I am part of a fantastic team, people with a true passion for technology, and that we manage 11 projects for leading automotive companies. Moreover, a part of these projects represent referrals from customers that were very satisfied with the quality of our work. Also, we`ve managed to bring our experience and expertise in the manufacturing industries, extending our know-how in new fields.
Regarding the second question, it was a remarkable start of the year. We started a new collaboration with an important Asian tier 1 supplier.
- When Hobbies and Work Come Together 🏀
I totally enjoy practicing scuba diving and sometimes I just grab my camera and relax in nature practicing wildlife photography. Of course, from time to time, I organize knowledge sharing sessions with Gogu, a friendly agama with a strong passion for technology. At the interview for joining our team, Gogu totally impressed me with his commitment to use his super skills to ensure bug-free software solutions.
- Advice for candidates
Always try to see the bigger picture, think twice and write code once. The work delivered by an embedded software engineer can have a direct impact on the end consumer`s safety and security. At all times bear this in mind when delivering your work and remain connected with the latest trends in the field in order to reach your true potential.
